Durham Land Company. 1915-1973.

Miscellaneous information regarding the founding of the Durham Land Company in 1915. Included are photocopies of reports from the State Land Settlement Board, an oral interview with the Durham Land Colony Secretary, Lorne C. McRae, maps of the colony, and a list of the original settlers. Also included is a copy of "The California State Land Settlements at Durham and Delhi" by Roy S. Smith in the Hilgardia, a copy of the transactions of the Commonwealth Club of California which includes a statement by Elwood Mead and copies of nine articles by reclamation specialists.

Elwood Mead (1858-1936) was territorial engineer and later, the first state engineer of Wyoming, 1888-1899, and author of its first water code. From 1899-1907, he was in charge of irrigation investigations for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was chairman of the Rivers and Water Supply Commission in Victoria, Australia, 1907-1915, professor of Rural Institutions at the University of California, 1915-1924, and Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 until his death in 1936....
